Christmas Season at The Queen Victoria

As most of you know, the Christmas Season is a huge event in Cape May and at The Queen Victoria.  Our Christmas season starts pretty early (yes, before Thanksgiving), and goes strong right through the New Year.

This year it seems like the Christmas Season in Cape May has been more popular than ever, with the town full of visitors enjoying this most festive of seasons.  Anna Marie and I have been thrilled to welcome LOTS of our guests back to The Queen Victoria for their first Christmas Season visit.

The good news for you, is that even if you haven't planned your visit to The Queen Victoria yet, it is not too late to experience your slice of Christmas paradise in 2018.  As full as our first 3 weekends have been this December, we still have rooms available for the coming weekend (Dec 21-22, 1 night stays are OK for that weekend), the week following (including Christmas Eve/Day), as well as the weekend before New Years and New Year's Eve itself.  We'll be fully decorated at The Queen Victoria all the way through the first weekend of January, giving those of you who have always wanted to experience Christmas in Cape May plenty of opportunity to do so in 2018.

We're always happy to assist you

find the best possible room for the dates you want to visit, or the best dates for the room you want to stay in. Call us at (609) 884-8702 to get started, or click the link below to reserve your room.

Gift Certificate Season

We are WELL into the Christmas Gift Certificate Season now, of course.  In fact, Christmas is only about a week away (assuming you read this shortly after receiving it).  You should know, however, that even though Christmas is fast approaching, the opportunity window for you to purchase a Christmas gift certificate for your special somebody is still wide open, and will be right up to Christmas, and even beyond (every year we sell several "belated" Christmas Gift Certificates and Happy New Year gifts).

As consumers, you obviously have an almost endless array of gift certificate options to consider, but if you think deeply about it, I'm confident that you'll conclude that the best of all possible gift certificates is one from The Queen Victoria.  There are so many reasons this is true.

  • Easy to purchase online or over the phone
  • The recipient of your gift is sure to love your gift
  • It is the gift that keeps giving ... your loved one will be excited about their visit to The Queen Victoria when they receive their certificate, when they plan and book their visit, as they anticipate their trip, and when they are actually at The Queen Victoria, enjoying your generosity
  • If you give it to your significant other, then you get to enjoy it as well!
  • You could give one to somebody every single year, maybe more than once a year, and they'll never mind receiving another one

Now that you've decided that you're ready to purchase a gift certificate or two, the rest is easy.

Call us at (609) 884-8702 or purchase one on our website by Clicking Here.

There are only a few days left for you to complete your Christmas shopping, and we'll even be able to get a certificate to you electronically at the very last minute.  But why delay?  Order yours today, and say goodbye to your Christmas Shopping stress!

Room of The Month

Windsor is a wonderful, large room located on the third floor of the Queen Victoria building.  Windsor's popularity can be attributed to its bright, cheery atmosphere, a king sized bed, the comfortable seating area, which includes a charming electric fireplace, and a plethora (how often does one get to use that word?) of windows featured on 3 of the four walls of the room.

The bathroom features a standard bathtub with integrated shower and a charming antique sink set into a vintage marble vanity top.

I think that Windsor just might be the room you need to reserve for your next visit to The Queen Victoria.

Discount Packages

Many of you have already started taking advantage of our terrific discounted "shoulder" season packages, for both reservations you've already enjoyed in November & December, as well as advance bookings made for visits in early 2019.  I believe I would find it hard to resist taking advantage of them at least once or twice a year if I didn't already spend most of my days at The Queen Victoria.

Winter Escape

The Winter Escape package is available for reservations between January 1, 2019, and March 31, 2019, and includes a Large Standard room for any 2 nights for $350 (plus tax).  The package also features some "value added" elements, including a complimentary cheese platter and a free beer tasting at the Cold Springs Brewery.  This is the only deep discount package we offer at The Queen Victoria which includes weekends, and virtually all guests who book it take advantage of that.  Cold Springs Brewery is only open Thursday through Sunday during the winter months, so keep that in mind as you plan your visit.  Though the package includes Large Standard rooms, you can upgrade to larger, more expensive rooms and enjoy similar savings.

* Package pricing is not available for Friday & Saturday of President's Day/Valentine's Day weekend (Feb 15 & 16, 2019).

The 234 package is a 2 night weeknight discount package offered Sunday through Thursday, starting November 1st and running all the way through the end of April.  Specifically, it includes 2 nights in a Standard room for $234 ($117/night).  Similar savings are available for our larger rooms as well, at a slightly higher price.  Reservations for this package can also be expanded to as many as 5 nights at the same discounted rate.

This really is a great deal, which I'm sure every Cape May lover (and Queen Victoria lover) will find hard to resist.

* This package is not offered on Thanksgiving or from 12/23 through 12/31 of 2018

Chocolate Lover's Weekend

Jan 25-26, 2019

May 10-11, 2019

A few weeks ago Anna Marie and I hosted our 2nd Chocolate Lover's Weekend.  By all accounts it was a resounding success, thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.  But this article is not just meant to tease you about what you missed.  No!  Rather, it is to inform you of your upcoming opportunity to experience it yourself in January.

Most of us love chocolate.  Most of us probably avoid the frequent consumption of chocolate, but every once in a while we all deserve a little indulgence.  The good news is that chocolate is good for you!  Yes, chocolate is high in antioxidants, especially dark chocolate, making it healthy as well as tasty.  We want to contribute to your good health, of course.

As you can see, we'll be serving lots of specialty chocolates (on the left, behind the cheese cubes), LOTS of chocolate baked goods (to the right), and goodies that are fun to drizzle with chocolate (no dipping in a public setting!).

To the right you can see the 6 pots of melted chocolates that were on the buffet.  Once again, we'll be offering some wonderful flavored melted chocolates, including Dark Chocolate, Mint Dark Chocolate, Raspberry Dark Chocolate, Orange Dark Chocolate, Cherry Dark Chocolate, and Sea Salt Caramel.  Believe me when I tell you that they taste as good as they sound!

I imagine it is kind of hard to look beyond Christmas & New Year's Eve, but if you stretch your imagination, I think you'll find that you'll be ready for a fun weekend a month after Christmas, which happily coincides with this event.

Insider Tip:  Book a reservation for Jan 25-26, and give it to your loved one for Christmas.  The combination gift of Chocolate and The Queen Victoria will surely be a treasured gift & memory.

Celebrating the New Year at The Queen Victoria

New Year's weekend is always a big deal at The Queen Victoria.  The inn is filled with guests seeking a fun, low-key way to celebrate the New Year.  For many of our frequent guests, a visit to celebrate New Year's is the highlight of their holiday season.

This year the New Year arrives on a Tuesday, giving you the opportunity to enjoy a couple of relaxing, enjoyable nights at The Queen Victoria starting on Sunday, December 30.  You're more than welcome to stretch it out and enjoy the entire weekend of course!

Though we don't host any New Year's events at The Queen Victoria, the town is full of celebration venues for New Year's Eve, offering you many options that fit your style and preference.

9th Annual Wine Lover's Weekend

Feb 8-9, 2019

The Wine Lover's Weekend wine blending party is one of the oldest events sponsored by The Queen Victoria.  It is also probably the most enjoyable, entertaining event that we sponsor.

Each February up to 30 guests join Anna Marie and me at Cape May Winery to participate in a wine blending party/competition.  If you enjoy red wine then you will absolutely love this event.

On Saturday afternoon we gather at the winery and break up into groups of 5 or 6 people creating teams that will work diligently, endeavoring to create the best possible blend of red wines from the decanters of wine that are sitting on the table.  These wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah, are drawn straight from the barrel, giving the participants of our event the first taste of these wines from the 2017 vintage.  We start by tasting each of the individual blending wines to ascertain their unique characteristics, and then embark on our blending adventure.  After each team creates, and tastes 5 or 6 different blends (usually each team member suggests one), they choose their favorite and submit it to the event guide.

While the guide starts blending up decanters of each blend, all of our participants take a tour of the winery, returning to find a glass of each team's blend sitting in front of their seat.  Everyone dutifully does a blind tasting of each wine and then a vote is taken to choose the "Best Blend", which will be bottled for each participant (since the wine isn't quite ready for bottling, the blending and bottling of our event's wine doesn't happen until a couple of months later, usually in early May.  That gives all of our participants an excuse to return to Cape May to pick up their wine!).

Anna Marie and I provide Antipasto platters to be sure nobody goes hungry.  I think that most participants make it their lunch.

This is truly a wonderful event that any wine lover will enjoy tremendously.  Though I suggested earlier that a Queen Victoria gift certificate would be the perfect gift item for your loved one, a reservation for this event might just be better.

We only have 3 seats left for this event for 2019, so don't delay in making your plans to attend!

$60/person (in addition to your reservation)

11th Annual "Big Cheesy" Weekend

March 8-9

Every March we pull out all the stops and transform afternoon tea into an unforgettable Cheese Tasting Party.  As you can see, our table is barely able to hold all of the different cheese platters that we prepare and serve, usually about 16 cheeses.  We always try to find a fun variety, perhaps somewhat exotic, selection of cheeses to create a tasting adventure.  We also serve premium breads, olives, olive oils, and roasted red peppers to make the event even tastier.

For those guests that are serious about their cheese, we provide a tasting/scoring chart to use as they make their way through all the cheeses.  Most people just taste all the different cheeses, trying to figure out which is their favorite.

This event is free for all guests spending the weekend at The Queen Victoria.  Over the many years that we've been hosting this event, it has become one of the most popular weekends of the year.

We encourage our guests to bring a bottle of wine if they are so inclined, to enjoy with their cheese.  Our buffet table generally ends up having a pretty healthy supply of wines.  We encourage you to bring a favorite wine, but make it a wine you're willing to share, as it becomes a pretty communal affair with regards to the wine.

More New Stuff!

Another House of Royals Ceiling Upgrade

A few months ago I featured our first installation of the new tin ceiling that we're putting up in much of the House of Royals building.  That was a small vestibule in the Prince Arthur room.  At the time, I promised you that I'd be sharing more pictures of additional ceiling upgrades as we rolled them out.  I absolutely want to keep all of my promises, especially to my favorite guests, so here we go again!

It turns out that it is a little difficult to take a picture of a ceiling in a smallish space such as a bathroom (perhaps any room, I've never tried it before).  I guess for the same reason it is a little hard to figure out what you're looking at here.  This photo is taken from the entrance door into the bathroom, looking toward the vanity sink & mirror.  In fact, you can see the part of the ceiling I couldn't get into the frame reflected in the mirror (I thought that was pretty clever!).

As you can see, the ceiling is rich and elegant looking, and really dresses the bathroom up.  Prince Alfred already had a bright bathroom, but these highly reflective tin panels made it even brighter.  I've always thought that Prince Alfred was an elegant room, and I think this new addition takes it to an even higher level.

A Beautiful Fall Sunrise

The other day as I was heading home to shower after my morning excursion, I was stopped dead in my tracks as I glanced towards the sunrise.  The glowing sky that was peaking past the corner of The Queen Victoria window turret was literally begging me to be photographed.  It was irresistible.

Sunrises are often quite beautiful in Cape May, though I suspect the vast majority of our guests never get to experience one, as it requires them to arise much earlier than most of us desire on a vacation.

This time of year the sun rises and sets over the ocean on the Cape May beach, which is fairly unique.  It can only happen on a south facing beach, such as Cape May has, during the winter.  Yes, that is one more thing that makes Cape May truly special and worth visiting at any time of the year.

Featured Gift Shop Item
Bayberry Soap Gift Box

Anybody who has ever stayed at The Queen Victoria, at least for the last 20 years or so, must surely remember fondly the bayberry soap they found in their bathroom.  The wonderfully soothing & comforting fragrance of our bayberry soap is sure to trigger pleasant memories of visits to The Queen Victoria.

In addition to the bars of bayberry soap that we provide in our guest rooms, we also sell a 3-bar gift set of the bayberry (the bars are bit larger than those we put in the bathrooms) that come packaged in this handsome box, which is perfect for a small gift under the tree or a stocking stuffer in your favorite Christmas stocking.  These sets also make a perfect gift for those special people that enable you to make your own visits to The Queen Victoria by watching your children, pets, and house.  Of course, they also make a great gift to give to yourself as you depart The Queen Victoria, so that you'll get to relive your stay here each time you use them.

Fun Things to Do in Cape May
Celebrate Christmas!

Many of you have expressed surprise to me when informed that The Queen Victoria is open 365 days a year, with the most common response being "Even on Christmas Day?".

I suppose that it may strike some people as being unusual to spend Christmas away from "home".  My response can only be that home is where your heart is, and The Queen Victoria holds a warm place in the hearts of many, many of our guests.

So who spends Christmas Eve & Day at The Queen Victoria?  Just about anybody. We've got lots of folks whose Christmas tradition is to spend Christmas at The Queen Victoria every year. We've got families that love to gather here from across the country and simply enjoy the company of their loved ones without the responsibility of hosting a gathering. We have several couples who spend every other Christmas with us as their grown/married children spend the holiday with their in-laws. We have non-Christian guests who don't celebrate Christmas, but enjoy the feeling of joy they find at The Queen Victoria, and are able to lightly participate in the very American tradition of Christmas.

There are lots of reasons why you might want to join us to celebrate Christmas at The Queen Victoria.  If you're not quite sure where you'll be spending Christmas this year, then I certainly suggest you consider The Queen Victoria.  We'd love to have you!

Restaurant Pick of the Month
Mad Batter

The Mad Batter became famous for its legendary breakfasts, but for many years now, it has become a very popular lunch & dinner destination too.  Anna Marie and I love the Mad Batter, especially for a dinner during the cooler months of the year when it is easier to get a table.

The Mad Batter is conveniently located on Jackson street, just a short walk from The Queen Victoria.  It has 3 dining rooms to accommodate its guests, including the bright & cheery new front porch, a dining area near the bar (you can eat at the bar too), and the charming room at the rear of the building, which feels like a glass enclosed porch

I often tell people that the Mad Batter has the best Filet in Cape May, which is offered as a "Twin Petite Filet" or a "Surf & Turf", with a single petite filet and a delicious crab cake (pictured above).  Speaking of the crab cake, it is certainly one of the best served in Cape May.

Those of you who know me well, know that I generally prefer restaurants where we can bring our own wine.  Sadly, the Mad Batter does not fall into that category, but Anna Marie and I make the exception for the Mad Batter far more often than anyplace else with a bar in Cape May.  Speaking of bars, the Mad Batter's is a wonderful place with a cool, relaxed attitude and features live music almost every night.  If you're looking for a fun place just to have a drink, you should put the Mad Batter near the top of your list.
