Cape May, NJ Attractions

Since opening twenty years ago, Cape May Winery has shared wonderful flavors with our city through the variety of wines they produce. The popular vineyard is one of our favorites as we partner with them every year for our Wine Lover’s Weekend.

Owned and operated by the Craig family for the last 12 years (they also own the Washington Inn and Lucky Bones), the winery grows more than 16 different varieties of grapes in four vineyards on more than 70 acres.  Visitors can’t resist the 20 different styles of wine that are made at Cape May Winery. The winery produces both red and white varietals, ranging from dry to sweet, but their signature wine is a Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, aged for over 16 months in French oak.  They also produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Rosé, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, and Port.

There are a few ways to experience the winery. They offer tours that include the “vines to wines” lesson, a wine tasting, a fruit and cheese tray, and a souvenir glass to take home. Tours are $20 per person. If you’d prefer to skip right into the sampling portion, they offer tastings of six of their wines for $6.

Who could resist a trip to the winery?  We recommend bringing your own cheese tray (available for purchase at The Queen Victoria) and making a day of it.  In the warmer months you can hang out at a bistro table on the vineyard patio or elevated deck.  In the cooler months it is hard to beat the comfortable leather sofas surrounding the log fire in the tasting room.  Most of our guests can’t resist bringing a bottle back with them to enjoy for a happy hour on our porch, or perhaps for dinner at one of our wonderful “BYOB” restaurants.

Anna Marie and I favor red wines, including the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, their “Red” blend, and recently the Zinfandel.  Lots of our guests enjoy the whites, including some of the sweeter varieties.  A BIG favorite, which is produced in limited quantities each year, is the Port, especially with some nice dark chocolate.  There is something for just about any wine palate at Cape May Winery.

For the ultimate winery experience at Cape May Winery, you need to participate in The Queen Victoria’s annual Wine Lover’s Weekend event, which is held every February.

Stay tuned to our blog, as next time we’ll be telling you all about this amazing event!
