Paradise Found

After our wetter and cooler than normal May, aren’t you seriously ready to experience this scene for yourself?

Anna Marie and I managed to make our first trek down to the beach the other day and soak up a couple hours of sunshine and beach scenery.  It was perfect, as was every single moment we’ve ever spent on Cape May’s lovely beaches.  I honestly can’t think of any place on the face of the planet that I’d rather spend an afternoon.  It really is paradise.

In fact, I think it’s safe to say that Cape May itself is a little slice of paradise.  The amazing thing about it, is just how close to home it is for most of our guests.  Where else in the world can you get to as quickly as you can get to Cape May that is such a complete escape from your every day world?  It is almost like we’re on a different planet, or perhaps another plane of existence.

If you’re still reading this, then you’re probably ready to make another trip down to Cape May and The Queen Victoria again.  You know we’d love to see you again!

We’re always happy to assist you

Room of The Month

Lillie Langtry

Sometimes our smaller, more modest rooms don’t get as much attention from me in our newsletters as they should.  That is certainly the case with Lillie Langtry, which I just realized I have not featured in a newsletter in over 3 years.  That is way too long in my mind.

It isn’t surprising that Lillie Langtry is one of our most popular standard rooms.  It is a bright, cheery, and comfortable room located on the 2nd floor of the Queen Victoria building.  The floral decor obviously tends toward the feminine side, as you can see from this picture, but I’ve never met a male guest who has stayed in the room that didn’t enjoy it anyway.  In fact, I always assume that men who are booking the room for a getaway with their lady are doing it to make them feel special.  Like most of our rooms, Lillie Langtry has a queen sized bed.  It also has beautiful Victorian furniture, and a bright, spacious bathroom.  Being a standard room, it is also one of our most affordable rooms.

Though it is hard for me to imagine having to personally make a choice of a room at The Queen Victoria, if I did, Lillie Langtry would certainly be on my list of rooms to consider (I think Anna Marie would love it).

Upcoming (and current) Special Events

Cape May Summer Concert Series

Summer 2017

The City of Cape May just updated their summer 2017 concert series schedule and it looks to be another great summer of entertainment.  As in past years, I’ve heard of every single performer on this list of big stars.  While most of them were big stars before my time, their music still resonates today.

Here’s who will be performing at Convention Hall nearly every Wednesday (yep, they switched from a Monday schedule) this summer:

  • July 5:    Herman’s Hermits, starring Peter Noone
  • July 12:  Tommy James & The Shondells
  • July 15:   The British Invasion Years (a Saturday concert!)
  • July 19:  Arlo Guthrie (with Special guest Sarah Lee Guthrie)
  • July 26: Jay & The Americans
  • July 31:  Martha Reeves & The Vandellas (this one is on a Monday!)
  • August 9:   Aaron Neville
  • August 16: Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals
  • August 19: Roanoke (another Saturday concert)
  • August 23: Mary Wilson of the Supremes (pictured above)

The shows all start at 8pm at the Cape May Convention Center.

Cape May Hops Festival

June 24 (10 am to 6 pm)

Yes, this wonderful outdoor event is returning to Cape May this weekend at the Emlen Physick Estate, and it looks to be better than ever.  This year’s theme is “Blues, Brews & BBQ”, which sounds like a great combination.  The band pictured at right is Bluebone, who will be performing between 12 noon and 2pm.  Three other bands will also be performing throughout the day:

BS Blues Band (10 - 12)

BC combo (2 - 4)

The Bullets (4 - 6)

As you can see, the festival is jam packed with music all day long, and the beer will be flowing that entire time.  Attendance is FREE, with local breweries selling their beer and food vendors making sure that beer doesn’t all go to your head.  There will also be a craft & collectibles show on site to give you a shopping opportunity in the midst of all the other fun.

Shakespeare at The Estate

July 19-23 & July 25-29

The REV Theater Company is returning to Cape May again this summer to perform Hamlet.  I just visited MAC’s website to investigate the production and found the following description (it definitely doesn’t sound like something you would expect me to write):

“This contemporary, opulent production will be ‘revved up,’ emphasizing the fusion of Shakespeare’s language and REV’s dynamic physicality, reflecting the intense emotional life of the play.  Another of REV’s trademarks is the active involvement of the audiences in our outdoor productions (just as it was in Elizabethan playhouses) as witnesses to and participants in the events, giving the play’s action great immediacy and excitement.”

The 2 hour production is being performed on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, and has a cast of 10, some of which perform more than one part.

If you’re looking for a fun, entertaining, and different experience for one of your evenings in Cape May this summer, this may just be the ticket.

Craft Beer & Crab Festival

August 5 (10 am to 6 pm)

Believe it or not, there aren’t many big events scheduled for Cape May during the summer.  I suppose that is because traditionally, the big events were scheduled off-season to keep people coming to Cape May, even after the beach was no longer a big draw.  This event is the exception, of course.  This year marks the 6th annual Craft Beer & Crab Festival being held on the grounds of the Physick Estate.

This festival has become a hugely popular event, a testament to how enjoyable it is.  With live music all day, plenty of crabs and other tasty, fun foods, and of course craft beer, it isn’t surprising.

Though our August bookings have been pretty robust of late, I noticed that we still have a few rooms available for the weekend of this festival.  If you’re trying to decide when is the best time for you to return to The Queen Victoria this summer, then perhaps this is just the thing you’ve been waiting for.

Lessons of History Distinguished Lecture Series

FeaturingAdmiral Thad W. Allen (retired)

October 8, 2017

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) is presenting the latest in their Lessons of History series, featuring Admiral Thad Allen USCG (retired), 23rd Commandant of the Coast Guard.  He will be presenting “Always Ready: Stories of American Leadership and Unity During Crisis”.

Admiral Allen’s noteworthy Coast Guard career was punctuated by two extraordinary assignments, which are exemplary of the Coast Guard motto Semper Paratus (Always Ready).   In 2005, President Bush placed Admiral Allen in charge of Hurricane Katrina onsite search-and-rescue and recovery efforts, due to Allen’s demonstrated leadership capabilities.  Given his reputation for successfully dealing with a National crisis, in 2010, President Obama assigned Admiral Allen as National Incident Commander to take charge of the total Federal government response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Dickens Christmas Extravaganza

December 3-6, 2017

Though I find it incredibly difficult to walk into a Christmas shop before around November of any given year, it is NEVER too early to start planning a Christmas visit to The Queen Victoria.  That is especially true if you want to experience this wonderful, festive event.  The Dickens Christmas Extravaganza is a 3 day festival filled with tours, feasting, entertainment and fun.  It is also a tremendous value!

The value starts with the 3 days of programming and 2 dinners, all for $175/person (1 of the dinners is the “Welcome Dinner” and is not technically part of the event.  Anna Marie and I treat our guests to a festive, fun dinner at the Merion Inn to kick-off the event.).  The value continues at The Queen Victoria, with the special “234” discount package that we offer, making it incredibly affordable to stay at your favorite Cape May B&B.

This years event once again features the renowned and wonderfully entertaining Dickens & Victorian era scholar Dr. Elliot Engel, who has been captivating audiences all over the world with his interesting and unique approach to history and literature for decades.

The Dickens Christmas Extravaganza is the perfect way to kick off the Christmas season.

More New Stuff!

New Brick Walkway (to the Crown Jewel)

I don’t really think that this photo does our beautiful new brick walkway justice, but I couldn’t resist sharing it with you.  For years we toyed with creating a brick walkway from the right side of the front porch of the Queen Victoria building.  The left side has always had a brick walkway leading around to the side porch, and it seemed a little unbalanced without one.

Actually, the walkway was an afterthought as we were planning the replacement of our lawn.  We figured that there was no time like the laying of a new lawn to create the new walkway.

I’m pretty sure that our guests in the Crown Jewel will especially love this new walkway, which will shorten their journey into the Queen Victoria Building.

Introducing Brothel Madam Sour Ale

@ Cape May Brewing Company

(Until It Is All Gone)

Earlier this year Cape May Brewing Company started crafting a series of special, limited production beers related to ghosts in Cape May.  We were excited to hear that their research had guided them to The Queen Victoria, and its story of ghosts in the House of Royals.  A few days ago, a crew visited us from Cape May Brewing Company to interview us and introduce us to their new release called Brothel Madam.  The photo at right was taken shortly after our tasting and very pleasant interview with Jimmy Valm (Director of Brewing Operations, upper right), Alicia Grasso (Director of Marketing, lower left), and Scott Armato (Storyteller ... yes that is his official title, upper left).

We had a great time tasting Brothel Madam, discussing the Cape May Brewing Company, its history and growth, production facilities, and this beer in particular.  It was one of those meetings where everyone learned something (that happens if you’re not careful, you know).

Cape May Brewing Company has certainly become one of Cape May’s 1st tier destinations, the kind of place you look forward to returning to on each visit to our beautiful town.  Their incredible focus on quality, taste, and fun probably accounts for that.  Each visit is an experience to treasure.

I’m told that Brothel Madam will be available at various retailers around Cape May, but will not be found on tap anywhere, due to its limited production.  It will definitely be found at the brewery tasting room, however.

Our Beautiful Gardens!

This is always such a beautiful time of year in our gardens, which are full of the colors of our summer annuals.  This is the Prince Albert front garden, of course, which we’ve planted with 2 different types of flowers.  The ones pictured here are called “Sunpatiens”, which is an ironic name considering that they prefer shade.  To the left of them, in the sunny side of the same garden, we planted Vinca in the same colors.

With the cooler, wetter May that we had, the Sunpatiens are truly in their glory.  The Vinca will be playing catch up as we head into the warmer weather.  You’ll have to see for yourself which ones you prefer!

Featured Gift Shop Item

Bayberry Soap Gift Pack

One of our most popular gift shop items is undoubtedly our Bayberry Soap Gift Pack, which features 3 oversized bars of the same soap that we provide in our guest rooms for the tub/shower.  I’m pretty sure that is because the fragrance of the soap is so wonderful that it is almost irresistible to take some home and enjoy it there.  I’ve always thought that it is the perfect way to be reminded every morning, at least for a while, of your time at The Queen Victoria.  Why not take a little vacation joy home with you?

It also occurs to me that the Bayberry Soap also makes the perfect gift for babysitters, dog sitters and house sitters.

Fun Things to do in Cape May

Cape May County Brew Tours

Last weekend this new company celebrated its grand opening and started its regular schedule of “Brew Tours”.  The tours  embark from the Barefoot Bar, right around the corner from The Queen Victoria, where lunch will be served, and then proceed to 4 or 5 establishments for a tasting.  The grand opening tour visited Slack Tide Brewery, 7-Mile Brewery, Cape May Brewing Company, and Nauti Spirits Distillery (Sweet Potato Vodka).

Ron, the owner of the company, stopped by today to explain his operation to us and we were pretty impressed.  One interesting feature is the tiered pricing scale rather than a “one size fits all” flat fee for a tasting tour.  Instead, he is offering 3 options:

  1. $125/person: Lunch with Beverage, T-shirt & promo materials, tour to 4 or 5 establishments, all tastings are included in the price
  2. $75/person: Lunch with Beverage, T-shirt & promo materials, tour to 4 or 5 establishments, tastings are not included (pay as you go ... ideal for someone that doesn’t want to do all 4 of the tastings)
  3. $55/person: tour to 4 or 5 establishments, T-shirt, no lunch, no promo materials, tastings are not included (pay as you go ... ideal for someone who doesn’t want to drive while doing tastings).

Anna Marie and I were thrilled to hear that they are offering our guests 10% off any booking.  All you have to do to get this discount is use the discount code “QV” when booking.

Restaurant Pick of the Month

Washington Inn

The Washington Inn is a perennial favorite of ours; a place we go for a special occasion and a nice classy experience.  It is certainly one of the nicest restaurants in Cape May.

Anna Marie and I went there not once, but twice during this Spring’s “Restaurant Week”, which must certainly say something for the establishment.  Anna Marie had the Cioppino both times, which she is almost genetically compelled to order when it is on the menu (it really is wonderful).  I followed suit the first time, but deviated to try the Flat Iron Steak on the second go-round, which was marvelous.  I wasn’t quite sure what a Flat Iron Steak was, and discovered that it is a lean, tasty, tender steak, which was sliced into medallions, and served with roasted peppers, sweet garlic, olives and roasted potatoes (they called it “Late Night Style”).  Dinner during restaurant week included an appetizer as well as dessert, so Anna Marie and I both went for the Crab Cake appetizer, which was truly incredible.  Dessert was a flour-less chocolate cake served with coffee ice cream ... a perfect finish!

The Washington Inn is located on Washington Street, about 4 blocks from The Queen Victoria, so it is a pleasant walk for most of our guests.  They also have valet parking available for those who would rather not walk.  My insider tip for the Washington Inn is that Sunday nights are “Wine Appreciation” night, when you are allowed to bring your own wine.  If you know me very well at all, you can guess that we almost invariably dine there on Sunday evenings.
